N-异丙基丙烯酰胺是丙烯酰胺衍生物单体，由于分子内有亲水性的酰胺基和疏水性的异丙基，使其均聚物具有较低的临界溶解温度等良好特性，主要用于制造具有感温特性的聚合物凝胶，例如：药物控释材料、酶的固体材料、脱水剂、浓缩剂等。还可用于制造变性胶乳、特种涂料、胶粘剂等。

1、丙烯酰氯与异丙胺为原料，乙酸乙酯条件下反应。 C ₃H ₇NH ₂+CH ₂CHCOCl——CH ₂＝CHCONHCH(CH ₃) ₂+HCl 以乙酸乙酯或苯为介质，以异丙胺(IPA)和丙烯酰氯(ACC)为原料。得到CH ₂＝CHCONHCH(CH ₃) ₂粗品，再通过正己烷重结晶，得到高纯度CH ₂＝CHCONHCH(CH ₃) ₂。产率约为88%。 2、丙烯腈与异丙醇为原料，在浓硫酸条件下反应。 CH ₂=CHCN+(CH ₃) ₂CHOHCH ₂-----CHCONHCH(CH ₃)

将0.15 mol丙烯腈，0.15 mol异丙醇，3×10^-4mol对羟基苯甲醚混匀后倒入250mL的四口烧瓶中，取0.45 mol浓硫酸倒入漏斗中从一个侧口中滴入，另两个侧口分别安装温度计与冷凝管，中间的瓶口装入搅拌器，控制搅拌速度在l00r／min。调节漏斗中浓硫酸的滴入速度，使反应瓶中的控制温度在55～65℃，滴加时间约60min，继续反应30min后，反应液的颜色为浅黄色。

反应液用氨水中和至pH=l～2，中和后，反应液分为三层，水层与油层分别放入两个烧杯中，水层充分冷冻使NIPAM单体结晶，浮在水层的上面，硫酸铵晶体沉淀在烧杯的底部；油层充分冷冻使之结块，然后，油层结块和水层NIPAM 晶体减压抽滤，置于真空烘箱中室温干燥，再用苯-正己烷混合溶剂重结晶至少3次，即得白色晶体状NIPAM，产率为54.2％。
