Borane, also known as borohydride, is a generic term for a series of compounds formed from both boron and hydrogen. Simple boranes are colorless, have an unpleasant smell and are highly toxic. It is usually unstable and spontaneously ignites in the air to form boron oxide. As the number of boron atoms increases, borane can be in a gaseous state (such as diborane) from a liquid state (such as pentaborane) to a solid state (such as decaborane). Up to now, more than 20 kinds of borane have been produced, which are divided into two types, and their general formulas are: BnHR+4 (n≥2): such as diborane (B2H6), pentaborane-9 (B5H9), sixteen Borane (B16H20); BnHR+6 (n≥3): such as propane borane (B3H9), pentaborane-11 (B5H11), decaborane (B9H15), and the like. Borane has an unpleasant odor. Lower borane (small number of boron atoms) is very reactive, spontaneously ignitable in air, easily hydrolyzed, halogenated, aminated. The most used and most important is diborane. Industrially, boron trifluoride and lithium hydride are used in diethyl ether to prepare. Other borane can be obtained by thermally decomposing diborane at different temperatures. Borane emits a lot of heat when it burns, so it can be used as a high-energy fuel for rockets and missiles. It can also be used as a treatment agent for metal or ceramic parts, a cross-linking agent for rubber. One of the important uses of diborane is as a reducing agent for the organic matter in the hydroboration reaction. Borane is highly toxic. Inhalation of diborane can damage the lungs. Inhalation of borane can cause heart failure. Advanced borane can poison the central nervous system and damage the liver and kidneys. Therefore, you must be very careful when using it.
